FAQs

What does the registration fee cover?

The registration fee covers admission to the event, all conference materials, transportation to and from the outreach locations, an SOS t-shirt, lunch and dinner (Tuesday–Friday).

What is the menu? What if my student has a food allergy?

Meals will consist of picnic-style lunches and hot dinners. All meals are prepared by SOS volunteer teams supervised by staff.

Picnic-style lunches will be assembled in the mornings and taken by students to their project sites. The first provided meal is lunch on Tuesday and the last meal will be a hot dinner on Friday.

There will be a cafe available selling items if anybody gets hungry in between!

If your student has a special dietary need or food allergy, please provide this information when prompted in the online registration. Participants with special dietary needs or food allergies are also welcome to bring their own food items to fill in as needed during the week.

Who can attend SOS?

SOS is open to any student who is considered a part of your church's 7th grade through 12th grade ministry as of June 1, 2019. If you're not sure when your church promotes or moves students to the next grade, contact your church's Youth Pastor before you register.

Will my student be alone?

Your student will be placed with a group and a group leader. This group travels together the entire week to all the outreaches. Each outreach is staffed with a trained adult as well as several other adult volunteers.

What is the cancellation policy?

Sorry, there are no refunds.

Is there an adult to student ratio?

Yes, you must have 1 adult (21 years of age or older) for every 8 students (18 years of age and under). If both boys and girls are registered in your group, you must have at least one male adult and one female adult registered for supervision at night.

What are the general expectations/qualifications I should have in an adult leader?

Be an adult (21 or over), be a Christ-follower, be willing to be used by God, and be available. Also, your church is responsible for having a child-protection policy where background checks have been performed.

Are background checks required for adults?

Yes, SOS requires that all participants and volunteers 18 years of age or older be screened and background checked by their church prior to attending.

Background checks must be national and no older than two (2) years from the start of SOS. 18-20 year olds are not considered “adults” during camp, however because of our commitment to safety, we still ask them to go through your church’s screening process and have background checks run.

What will we be doing at SOS?

Be ready to tackle any project and expect to interact each day with local residents from the community. Projects could include working with children at a day camp, serving at a food bank or homeless shelter, leading a block party, improving the homes of people in need by making repairs, assisting the elderly, doing yard work, facilitating a sports camp, landscaping, painting, and/or serving churches and other human service organizations in different ways.

What will an average day be like?

See sample schedule.

What if I have a student that needs to leave early or arrive late?

We ask that all participants make every possible effort to arrive on time and stay for the entire time. Every part of SOS is valuable and helps guarantee a life-changing experience. If you have to leave early or arrive late on a day for summer school, a job, or other approved commitment you will need to contact us ahead of the SOS week and submit a TIME AWAY card.

What are the worship services like?

Focused on Jesus! Because our goal is to point students to Christ, our nightly worship services focus on providing participants with a powerful worship experience and Christ-centered Biblical teaching that will challenge them to respond to Jesus in ways they will never forget.

Is there a SOS dress code?

While SOS doesn’t have a formal dress code, we serve local organizations that do have specific requirements for volunteers. Many of our partner organizations don’t allow volunteers to wear spaghetti straps, shirts that reveal the midriff, short shorts or flip flops. And, of course, no clothing with offensive language or images. Don’t be turned away from your assigned project due to inappropriate dress! We request modest clothing choices for all participants of SOS.

Pack plenty of t-shirts, longer shorts, capris or pants, and closed-toe shoes.

Please have female students bring a one-piece swimsuit in case they are assigned to a project site that has water-related activities.

Is there a SOS store? Do we need extra spending money?

There will be resources and SOS products available for purchase throughout the week, plus opportunities to buy snacks or beverages during your time at SOS. Sorry techies, Bitcoin is not accepted.
