This past weekend, a powerful message reminded us of the beauty and impact of inviting others into our lives. Simple steps of hospitality can lead to deep connections and open doors for sharing the gospel.
The Power of Invitation
Spring is here, and with it comes the anticipation of Easter—a season of renewal, hope, and new beginnings. Last week’s challenge was to be curious about others and invite three people into our lives, whether to a meal, a conversation, or church. This challenge sparked something deep—what if we truly stepped out of our comfort zones and made space for others?
Reaching out can feel intimidating. What if they aren’t interested? What if it feels awkward? But taking that step, even with nerves, can lead to relationships we never expected. Those small acts of courage—sending a text, extending an invite, opening our homes—can be the beginning of something meaningful.
The Great Commission: A Call to Share
The early church grew through personal connection, not through grand platforms or perfect words. Jesus gave the Great Commission in Matthew 28, calling His followers to go, make disciples, and share their faith. This wasn’t just for the pastors or the “qualified”—it was for everyone.
Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
The first Christians didn’t keep their faith to themselves. They invited others in, shared meals, told their stories, and created a ripple effect that continues today. That same invitation is ours to extend, even in the ordinary moments of life.
Overcoming Barriers to Hospitality
There are so many reasons to hold back:
- Busy Schedules – There never seems to be enough time.
- Insecurity – Worries about our homes, food, or whether we’re “good enough.”
- Financial Concerns – The fear of not having enough to offer.
- Doubt – Wondering if these efforts will even make a difference.
- Fear of Rejection – The risk of someone saying no can feel discouraging.
But here’s the truth: hospitality isn’t about impressing others. It’s about making room—physically, emotionally, and spiritually—for people to feel seen and valued. God works through even our smallest efforts, often in ways we can’t see right away.
Seeing with New Eyes: A Story of Healing
In Mark 8, Jesus heals a blind man in stages. At first, the man sees people like trees walking around. It takes a second touch from Jesus for his vision to fully clear.
That’s how faith works sometimes. We may not always see the impact of our invitations or conversations right away. But God is always at work. What starts as a simple act—sending a message, offering a seat at the table—can lead to something far greater than we imagined.
Practical Steps to Invite Others
Here are some ways to be intentional in building community:
- Create a Welcoming Space – It’s not about perfection; it’s about making people feel at home.
- Be Intentional – Set aside time and energy to invest in relationships.
- Engage in Deep Conversations – Ask about highs and lows, listen well, and share your own experiences.
- Expand Your Circle – Invite people who are different from you; diversity strengthens community.
The Power of Sharing Your Story
One of the most powerful ways to connect with others is through personal storytelling. Sharing how God has moved in our lives isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about being real. It’s about giving others a glimpse of His love through our experiences.
Faith-sharing isn’t just for church settings. It happens over coffee, during a walk, in a text message. Our stories have the power to encourage, inspire, and point people to Christ in ways we may never fully realize.
Do It for the Plot
Life is a story unfolding, and when we take steps of faith—whether big or small—we allow God to write something beautiful. Stepping out of our comfort zones, making the invitation, sharing our stories… it all matters.
So, who in your life needs an invitation? Who might be feeling unseen or longing for connection? Let’s take that next step, extend the invitation, and trust in what God can do through our obedience.
Reflection Questions
- Who in your life might be longing for connection but hasn’t been invited in yet? How can you take a step toward reaching out to them this week?
- What fears or hesitations have held you back from inviting others into your life? How can you trust God to work through your efforts, no matter how small?
Challenges for the Week
- Examine Your Heart – Take time in prayer to honestly reflect: What is holding you back from inviting others in? Is it fear, busyness, or something else? Confess it to God and ask Him to help you step out in faith.
- Seek Accountability – Share your commitment to being more invitational with a trusted friend or mentor. Ask them to check in with you and encourage you to follow through.
- Act on It Now – Who are the three people God has placed on your heart? Write their names down, pray over them, and take action—send a text, make a plan, or set a reminder to reach out.
