The 5 Pillars of Financial Discipleship: Ownership

Cassy Cooper | September 14, 2024

The first pillar is the hardest for most of us to accept and act upon: ownership.

In Psalm 24:1: “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.”

Accepting God as the owner of everything is an essential first step in allowing Jesus to become the Lord of everything he has blessed us with.

I’m not gonna lie - This Pillar was hard for me. I fed into the world’s lie for years that I worked hard for my money. It was because of my hard work and dedication that I had accumulated the things I did. “It is all mine,” I used to say. Well, guess what? It was never mine.

It was after I rededicated my life to Christ that he showed me that he gave me the gifts and talents. He gave me the job, not the person who interviewed me. God placed people in my life to love, support, and disciple me. God revealed himself to me through his word, that he was the rightful owner of everything, and my job was to learn how to be a good steward of his gifts to me. It was humbling!

So once we realize God Owns it all, the rest of the pillars become easier to live out.
