Day 5: Wednesday, May 17, 2017
Today we went back to the Rescue of God children's home to continue our project from Monday. It's rainy season here and the children were out of school today due to their fear of a possible hurricane. We had a light rain shower, mild winds, gray skies, and most importantly, no hurricane!
Half of our group took the children down to the nearby school to keep them occupied while we finished up our projects. Three of the older boys stayed behind and we quickly put them to work. They jumped in with the "Handy Andys" to work on the armoire we started on Monday. (We have 3 Andys in our group!)
Watching the boys learn how to use a chalk line and power tools made building the armoire so much more meaningful. The boys gleamed with gratitude as they learned a new skill.
After lunch, we all returned to the school for some group playtime. Back2Back refers to this group playtime as, "Play with a Purpose" because it allows the children to better understand appropriate touch and having a perception of their surroundings.
One of the games we played is the "Mango" game. The leader starts by asking everyone to clap their hands and sing, "Mango, Mango, Mango" repeatedly. Then the leader calls out a number and everyone forms a group of that selected number. If you don't have the right number in your group you are out.
It was a joy scooping up the children while hearing their giggles and sharing their hugs. And to think this was a game we shared.
We said our goodbyes for the day. The only difference between Monday and today was that we received tender little hugs from the children instead of handshakes. Our God is so good!
